Assignment: More Expanded Squares

rejected designs

symmetrical

After a few trials and errors (and struggling with the craft knife), this is the design that I came up with for my symmetrical expanded square. I cut the paper up into arrows and glued the big square in a tilted position to try to give it a sense of dynamism. It almost looks like the square is being pulled apart. I think I might have been subconsciously influenced by superhero emblems like Iron Man's arc reactor while I was cutting this up. I chose the colour red to enhance the dynamic and energetic feeling.

asymmetrical

This is my asymmetrical expanded square. I call it, "Thinking About Boxes (And Boxes And Boxes And Boxes)". I used a geometric shapes, namely simple squares cut into frames again and again, but arranged it into a non-symmetrical composition, instead of using organic shapes. I arranged it to look like a thought bubble, and I thought it was interesting to use straight-edged shapes instead of the usual cloud shapes. It also looks like the boxes are spilling out of each other. Depending on how you look at it. I used yellow paper to symbolise imagination.
